The story is about a single mother working her way through law school to free her brother, who had been wrongfully convicted of murder. Swank will play the title role in the true story of a high school dropout will not abandon her belief that her brother, Kenneth, had been framed. In between raising kids and waiting tables, she worked her way through college and law school so she could represent her brother after he used up his attempts to lure back defend their faith through public domain.

When Betty Anne Waters' brother, Kenny (Sam Rockwell) was arrested on charges of murder and sentenced to life in 1983, Betty Anne, a wife and mother of two Massachusetts, dedicates his life to overturning the conviction murder.

Convinced that her brother is innocent, Betty Anne put myself through school, college and ultimately law school in a 18-year mission to free Kenny. With the help of best friend Abra Rice (Oscar-nominee Minnie Driver), Betty Anne pores through questionable evidence mounted by the police the small town of Nancy Taylor (Academy Award Application candidate Melissa Leo), carefully retracing the steps leading to the arrest of Kenny. Belief in her brother – and his duties to the truth – to push Betty Anne and her team to find out the truth and using DNA evidence in the hope of exonerating Kenny.
